A 1953 Prediction About Cellphones

7 Dec 2020 10:11 AM | Anonymous

Predictions about the future often turn out to be inaccurate. However, in 1953, writer Mark R. Sullivan published an article in the Tacoma News Tribune that seems to have been very accurate. Sullivan predicted that people will be surrounded by telephones wherever they go, unable to get away from them even if they don’t want to be around them.

Yes, all of the above is commonplace today.

As a child in the 1950s I would hear the same telephone prediction from my father who worked for Western Electric the telephone supplier for Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company. My sister and I would panic thinking that whoever we might be talking to in the future might be able to "see" our hair done up in rollers when we answered the telephone! If only Daddy could see the telephones of today!!
